About SDAC

What is SDAC

The Student Disability Access Center (SDAC) is the University of Virginia’s designated access agency for students with disabilities. We support UVA students in the work of creating access to the full University experience. Our primary role is to determine eligibility and to provide reasonable academic accommodations for students with disabilities in line with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended. These federal laws ensure that institutions of higher learning provide equal access to students with disabilities who are "otherwise qualified" to meet the essential demands of the academic program.

The SDAC provides services to two groups of students: those who have been previously diagnosed with a disability; and those who have never been diagnosed, but find themselves struggling academically, and seek advice and support on their difficulties.

Mission and Vision

The mission of the Student Disability Access Center is to support the University’s commitment to accessible education. For UVA’s students with disabilities, we encourage self-determination and independence via accommodations, education, consultation, and advocacy with the goal of building an equitable academic experience.

Our vision is for individuals with disabilities to have full access to the physical, educational, social, cultural and political milieu of the University of Virginia. The staff of the Student Disability Access Center (SDAC) embrace the values of The University (accountability, diversity, integrity, respect, social responsibility) and the values of the Student Affairs Office (knowledge, humanity, responsibility, integrity, community), particularly as they have bearing on accessibility, equal opportunity, collaboration and learning. SDAC strives to promote accessibility for all individuals with disabilities including faculty, staff, family, friends, guests of the University, and members of the community.

Information for Prospective Students

Whether you are a high school student in the early stages of considering colleges, a student at another college considering transfer, or you have applied and been offered admission - indeed whether you are a prospective student or the parent/guardian of a prospective student, we offer a warm welcome and invite you to contact us (434-243-5180 or sdac@virginia.edu if there is any issue you would like to discuss.

Members of the SDAC staff are available to meet with prospective students and their families regarding disability accommodations and support services available through SDAC and through other University agencies. The SDAC regularly acts as a liaison between students with disabilities and other University offices, including Housing, Parking & Transportation, and the Registrar. Every incoming student with a disability is invited to have a consult appointment at the SDAC. Even if you are not planning on using accommodations, it can be useful to review needs and available services and resources. SDAC staff members are also present at every session of the University Summer Orientation programs to answer questions and provide information.
